GETTING STARTED WITH AI

A little guidance makes AI useful.

You’ve probably heard of ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI tools. You don’t need to learn them all. Start with something you’d like help doing — a family letter, a recipe, a trip, or a question you’ve been meaning to explore.

Four tools you may hear about

ChatGPT: Try it for everyday questions, ideas, and step-by-step explanations. Ask for dinner ideas using ingredients you already have.

Claude: Try it for writing and organizing your thoughts. Turn a few memories into a story to share with your family.

Gemini: Google’s AI assistant can help with brainstorming, writing, and planning. Ask it to organize your ideas for a weekend away.

Perplexity: Try it for researching questions with links to sources. Open those sources to check the details before making plans or decisions.

These tools have overlapping abilities. The right starting point is the one you feel comfortable using.

Start with one small win

Try asking:

“Help me write a warm thank-you note to a friend. Ask me a few questions first so it sounds like me.”

You can keep the conversation going: “Make it shorter,” “Explain that more simply,” or “Give me another idea.”

A few habits worth keeping

Keep passwords, account numbers, and private records out of your prompts. Check important answers against a reliable source. For medical, legal, or financial decisions, take your questions to the appropriate professional.

Before subscribing, check the provider’s current free options and limits. You may not need a paid plan for what you want to do.

You don’t have to figure it out alone

Your AI Neighbor helps you choose a starting point, get comfortable on your own device, and practice something useful — with a patient, real person available to guide you.
